"Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them. They make the impossible happen." - Dr. Robert Jarvik

O-Tatsu Taiko aims to be a leader.

The group was founded by Sandra Shen in the Fall of 2001. Starting as a group of hardly 4 members, with a total of 2 taiko drums, practicing in Sandra’s living room, O-Tatsu Taiko has grown to a group of over 19 active participants who give over 10 performances, organize and produce at least 4 special events, host over 12 workshops led by professional taiko players and build about 3-4 new taiko per year, all in addition to holding full-time jobs. O-Tatsu equipment includes over 13 hand-made taiko by group members and O-Tatsu Taiko now has 2 practice spaces, one in Greenwich, CT and another in Pelham, NY.

O-Tatsu Taiko is happy to organize events where other taiko groups can gather and meet people with like minds and interests. O-Tatsu Taiko events have included members from: Isshin Taiko, Izumi Taiko, Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble, Ryu Shu Taiko, Soh Daiko, Swarthmore Taiko, Taiko Tides, Taikoza and Wadaiko Ensemble TOKARA.

O-Tatsu Taiko has performed at several venues including HSBC, The Rich Forum, Palace Theatre, Peabody Museum, Yale University and for the NY Jets at the Japan Consulate of NY. O-Tatsu Taiko has been invited to perform at the 10th Annual International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven, CT, a two week long event, attended by over 150,000 guests.

O-Tatsu Taiko is a community group with non-profit 501(c)3 status via its fiscal agent, SCDC (Stamford Cultural Development Corp). The group is based in Stamford, CT. To book an event, click here.
