O-Tatsu Taiko Learning Philosophy

Rather than offering “classes” as many other taiko groups do, O-Tatsu Taiko offers practice sessions. We do not have a teacher. We are all students, all learning and trying to improve. People who join our practice sessions are young and old. Some have many years of taiko experience and others come with no taiko experience at all and others fall somewhere in between. Yet, we all share a passion for taiko drumming and we all aim to learn from each other and pass on what we have learned to others.

O-Tatsu Taiko’s Founder, Sandra Shen often leads our practice sessions, but others will fill in as well and take turns leading the group and we all aim to find our strength, share it with others, notice our weakness and seek out help to improve with the help of others.

In this way, no one is a beginner for very long and at any given moment we are all teaching and learning. For O-Tatsu Taiko, responsibilities do not end with learning a rhythm. For the person who has not yet tackled a rhythm or movement, their responsibility is to seek out help from others. For the person who already knows how to play a rhythm/movement, their responsibility is to understand how to best share what they know in a way that will resonate with the person who is seeking help.

If you think you may have a passion for taiko drumming, join us for a free practice session and see what it is all about.
