Drum Building Workshops

O-Tatsu Taiko offers a drum building workshop series based upon interest. You do not need to own a taiko drum in order to join us for practice. However, some consider making their own taiko as a "right of passage" as you will gain a new respect for your instrument if you decide to take this path. No experience is needed. However, do not expect to be done in a couple of days. On average, it takes about two months to complete a taiko drum assuming you work on it for several hours each weekend. (This includes chatting, feasting on good eats, a mishap here or there that requires extra steps, soaking in some rays, an occasional Saturday brunch, some procrastinating… yadda, yadda) If you are a speed demon you could complete your taiko in less than a week, but then it wouldn't be half as fun!!

You should know that a home grown taiko will cost over $350 in materials alone. That doesn't include all of your hard labor. However, this is very reasonable when you consider the cost of the very desirable, but also prohibitively expensive, Asano Taiko which will clean out most anyone's slush fund pretty quickly,….unless you also own a Hummer and a Rolex too! If you do, please come join our group!!
